The Joy of Cover Letters
Dear Sir or Madam:
I would like to ask the fine members of ONTD_Careers for advice about cover letters. I believe that our shared experience could help us compose more effective cover letters and thus lead us to better careers.
I have a firm grasp of the English language and have been trained in persuasive writing. However, I would welcome additional input on composing cover letters. While many of us work in industries that allow for creative cover letters, there still remain those of us who are obliged to provide a standard cover letter as a resume accompaniment. Is it possible to avoid horribly stilted language in these missives? What is the best way to explain a work experience that ended badly? Are contractions really forbidden?
I would greatly welcome any comments or advice you might provide, as well as reference to other resources any of you have used in the past, such as books or websites.
Very truly yours,
Ceruleanshipper
